Hazard: Tornado

Tornadoes are spawned from powerful thunderstorms and are one of nature’s most violent storms. They can cause fatalities and devastate a neighborhood in seconds. A tornado appears as a rotating, funnel-shaped cloud that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground with whirling winds that can reach 300 miles per hour. Damage paths can be in excess of one mile wide and 50 miles long. The most common type of tornado mitigation project involves shelters or safe-rooms for life-safety. The BCA Resource Kit can be used to evaluate safe rooms in addressing tornado hazards, including the need to address multiple hazards in a single BCA module run.
