Hazard: Earthquake

Earthquakes can strike suddenly at any time of the day or night, often causing extensive property damage and many injuries. Although there are no guarantees of safety during an earthquake, identifying potential hazards ahead of time and advance planning can save lives and significantly reduce injuries and property damage. In 1977, Congress established the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) as a long-term, nationwide program to reduce the risks to life and property in the United States resulting from earthquakes.
